What Cognitive Biases Are (and Are Not)

Daniel Kahneman's framework from "Thinking, Fast and Slow" is the most useful starting point: the brain operates two systems. System 1 is fast, intuitive, automatic, and emotional. System 2 is slow, deliberate, logical, and effortful. Cognitive biases arise when System 1 produces answers that System 2 either doesn't check or can't override.

When explaining others' behaviour, over-attributing it to character and under-attributing it to situation. When someone cuts you off in traffic, they are a bad driver; when you do it, you were late. The cognitive bias where people with limited knowledge in a domain overestimate their own competence, while genuine experts often underestimate theirs.
